MOBILE MEDIA SCHOLAR PROGRAM: FALL 2004

Programs Home | Mobile Media Scholar Program Announcement

The New Media Institute
Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication
University of Georgia

The Mobile Media Scholars Program is designed to create industry leaders in the area of mobile media. Students selected as Mobile Media Scholars will engage in a year long in-depth exploration of the power and potential of mobile media. Students will conduct research in the area of mobile media and they will build prototypes of mobile media applications and content systems. And they will explore how mobile media is developing around the world.

Requirements for the Mobile Media Scholars Programs:

  • Students must be able to enroll in all of the classes required of the Mobile Media Scholar Program. Classes are listed below.
  • Mobile Media Scholars will be hired to work in the Mobile Media Consortium 13 hours per week, each week. Mobile Media Scholars who are undergraduates will receive $10/hour while graduate students will receive a graduate assistantship (which includes a tuition waiver).

Application Process:
Students must submit the following samples of work to be considered

  • An online research report.
2004/2005 MMScholar Applicants should submit a sample of a written research project - something you've written for class will be perfect.
  • An online portfolio page of web work.
This portfolio should contain links to at least one web site you had a significant role in completing.
  • A statement of purpose (2 pages max) stating why you want to participate in program and why you believe you would be an asset to the program. (This should be an online document as well.)

Application Timeline:

  • Application Materials Due -- 4/15/2004, 12P
Send an email with the appropriate links to nmi@uga.edu.
  • Applicants Notified -- May 2004
All applicants will be notified via email about whether they have been accepted.

Selection:
Each year a small group of students will be selected to participate in the Mobile Media Scholars program. Selection will be based on the quality of submitted work and the student’s stated rationale.

Intellectual Property Policy:
The level of interaction, collaboration, and cooperation between students, staff, faculty and industry will be more in-depth and intense than it has ever been in any other New Media Institute class. Students will work closely with other students, teachers, and representatives of industry on every research paper, prototype, and project. In addition, Mobile Media Scholars will have unprecedented access to technology, software, hardware, and other resources. In essence, every MMScholar project will be a team project of the NMI's new Mobile Media Research Laboratory. This new level of interaction between all parties and new access to resources owned by the University of Georgia requires that the products and projects of the Mobile Media Research Laboratory and the Mobile Media Scholars belong to the New Media Institute and University of Georgia. All parties will retain limited ownership rights on the work they perform. But the primary owner of the outcomes of the Mobile Media Research Lab and the Mobile Media Scholars programs will be the University of Georgia. If you have any questions about this policy, please talk to me, Scott Shamp. It very important that you understand and feel comfortable with this policy.

Mobile Media Scholars Program of Study:
In 2004-2005 Mobile Media Scholars will explore the impact of mobile media on quality of life. Industry has focused on how to build businesses around powerful new forms of wireless communications. They have not paid enough attention to how mobile media can change our lives – for the better. This year the Mobile Media Scholars will focus on five areas where mobile media technology can influence quality of life:

  • Healthcare
  • Education
  • Environment
  • Public Safety
  • Social and Economic Disparity, and
  • Entertainment

These will be called our QOL (Quality of Life) Factors. Each Mobile Media Scholar will investigate mobile media from the perspective of one of the QOL Factors

Fall 2004 – Research
NMIX 4490/6490 – Mobile Media Research (3 hours)
Wednesdays -- 9:00A - 12:15P ( but if you really want to participate and this time slot doesn't work, let us know -- maybe we can adapt)
During the Fall Semester, students will focus on two areas:
  • The state of wireless technology
  • The application of mobile media technology to their QOL factors.
  • At the end of the semester, each Mobile Media Scholar will produce two white papers: one focusing on some aspect of wireless technology and the other focusing on mobile media and their QOL Factor. MM Scholars will be responsible for planning a Mobile Media Research Symposium at the NMI Holiday New Media Slam in December. MM Scholars will present their white papers at this symposium. In addition, the white papers will be published and distributed during the following semester.
    Spring 2005 – Prototype
NMIX 4510 – Mobile Media Prototype (3 hours)
    Wednesdays -- 9:00A - 12:15P
Spring Semester MM Scholars will develop mobile media applications focusing on their QOL Factors. For instance, one MM Scholar will produce a mobile media solution in the area of healthcare while another will develop one for public safety. MM Scholars will present these mobile media applications at the Spring “Go Mobile or Go Home” in April. This mobile media project will take the place of the student’s capstone project.
