GAI was the first to perform routine physical exams on whale sharks and were able to understand the complex food filtration system of whale sharks that is not seen in other fish.

The GAI veterinarian and husbandry team traveled to Asia to study the sharks in their natural habitat. They are also part of a field research team off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico studying the behavior, feeding patterns and nutritional requirements of sharks in the wild.
