Digital Mass Media Major


This major will prepare students to lead the technological initiatives of traditional mass media players–newspapers, broadcasters, magazines, etc. The degree will provide students with the skills to develop new digital mass media systems and to repurpose existing media products to address the needs of a new digital media market.  Each Digital Mass Media major will develop an an "Area of Emphasis" in an existing Grady College program:  Public Relations, Advertising, Telecommunications, Publication Management, Newspapers, or Magazines.

Undergraduate Degree (ABJ) Requirements

Major: Digital Mass Media (31 credit hours)


UGA CORE: Areas A through F (60 credit hours)

  • AREAS A through E: Must be completed prior to acceptance into Grady

  • AREA F: Must be completed prior to graduation.


MAJOR REQUIREMENTS (25 credit hours)


  •  NMIX 2020–Intro to New Media (3 hours)

 Introduction to the history and technological foundations of old, now, and next media.

  • NMIX 4110 -- New Media Production (3 hours)

Web creation and programming.

  • NMIX 4310–Rich Media Production (3 hours)

The creation of audio and video for distribution online. This course will focus on the skills necessary to develop and distribute digital video products.

  • NMIX 4111–New Media Design (3 hours)

The creation of visual elements (graphical and photographic) for incorporation into online digital mass media systems.

  • INTERACTIVE (3 hours)
The programming skills necessary to create new digital media systems.
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT (3 hours)

Techniques necessary to manage a complex project from inception to completion.

  • NMIX 4220 & NMIX 4221–New Media Topics I & II (4 hours)

 Discussion of the current digital media trends, techniques, technology and issues in
  • NMIX4510 -- New Media Capstone (3 hours)

The conception and creation of a large scale digital media project.

Telecommunications

  • TELE 3010–Intro to Telecommunications (3 hours)

  • One of the following

    • TELE 3110–Writing for Electronic Media (3 hrs)

    • TELE 3210–Intro to Production Basics (3 hrs)

    • TELE 3310–Media Program & Management (3 hrs)

    • TELE 3410–Media Research & Theory (3 hrs)


Publication Management, Newspapers, & Magazines

  • JOUR 3310 – Intro to Print Media (3 hours)

  • One of the following

    • JOUR 3410–News Writing & Reporting (3 hrs)

    • JOUR 3510–Editing & Makeup (3 hrs)



ELECTIVES OUTSIDE GRADY COLLEGE (15 hours)

Choose 15 hours of upper level courses (3000–5000) from no more than two areas. These may not be Grady College courses or transferred journalism and mass communication courses.


ADDITIONAL ELECTIVES (14 hours)

Choose 14 additional hours in any level (1000 and above) and from any area. For accreditation reasons, no more than 40 hours of Journalism and Mass Communication courses (ADPR, JOUR, JRLC, TELE, NMIX) may count towards graduation; because Digital Mass Media is a 31 hour major, no more than 9 hours of Journalism and Mass Communication courses may count as Additional Electives.
