1. What is the New Media Interdisciplinary Certificate(NMIC)?
The NMIC allows students to develop new media skills and knowledge to complement expertise in their chosen field of study. It is a credential certifying the student's understanding of and proficiency in new media. A student can earn the NMIC while completing a degree in his or her chosen field of study. The NMIC guarantees that a graduate is expert in the application of technology within a given profession.

2. How do I earn the New Media Interdisciplinary Certificate?
To qualify for the certificate, students must complete seventeen hours with a B or better in designated courses: eleven hours of certificate core courses and six hours of elective courses. Please check out our web site at www.nmi.uga.edu/programs/certificate/ for details regarding the certificate core courses that we offer as well as the electives that apply to the NMIC.

3. What is the difference between an interdisciplinary certificate and a minor?
A certificate and a minor are very similar - both require additional credit hours (usually between 15-18 hours) in a field of study and both will appear on your transcript. The major difference between them is regarding where the additional credit hours are spent. A minor concentrates in one area - all of the classes for a minor come from a particular department. For example, if you are pursuing a minor in English, all of the classes you take will be from the English department. A certificate is more interdisciplinary meaning that some classes required for the certificate cross colleges or fields of study. For example, for the NMIC, you can take electives from colleges other than the Grady College. A certificate will also give you a more defined set of skills. After obtaining the NMIC, you will be able to quantify to a potential employer your proficiency in new media.

4. How do I apply for the New Media Interdisciplinary Certificate?
There is no formal application process for the NMIC. After completing the NMIX2020 course and attending an orientation at the New Media Institute regarding the NMIC program, you just need to let us know you are interesting in pursuing the Certificate. We will then meet with you periodically to discuss Certificate requirements and any questions you may have. You must maintain a B or higher average in all Certificate-related classes to be eligible to receive the Certificate. You will also need to discuss your pursuit of the NMIC with your college advisor.

5. What students take NMI courses?
A student of any major can take NMI courses! We have a very diverse group of students that pursue the NMIC that are all brought together by a common interest in new media.

6. When are courses offered?
We offer a full range of NMIX courses in Fall and Spring semesters. We only offer NMIX 4510 - New Media Capstone - during Spring Semester. During the summer sessions, we offer a pared-down schedule of courses. Our web site is always updated with our course schedule - www.nmi.uga.edu/courses/ - or call us at 706.542.6872.

7. How do I know what NMI courses to take when?
We understand that sometimes its difficult to fit everything into your schedule! First, please talk with your advisor if you have any questions regarding how NMI courses fit into your UGA experience. And, of course, we are always here to answer any questions you may have regarding our courses and when they are offered.
