Why final exams this year are the worst yet

No, it’s not because I have four on the same day.  It’s not even that I HAVE four, I only have one bona fide final exam, but that’s not the issue.  I have three exams that will make the final optional on two school days.  But even that by itself is not that frustrating, it’s that I am SOOOOOO close to a 4.0!

Finance 3000

This is the first semester I have come so close to something so amazing, and I will HATE myself if I don’t take full advantage of the opportunity.  What’s funny is this semester isn’t THAT easy of a semester.  Last semester I took Horticulture and Entomology, basically “A” factories.  My schedule this semester consists of two New Media classes, two Management classes (3000 and 4020), Hace 2100 (easy), and the absolutely HELLISH Finance 3000 (I actually LOVE FINA 3000, I’m just trying to express how much work goes into getting the grade).

So here is what my schedule looks like this week:

Friday (4/28): MGMT 4020 Final and HACE 2100 Final

Saturday (4/29): Study for MGMT 3000 on Monday and finish New Media Final project

Sunday (5/1): Study for MGMT 3000 and FINA 3000

Monday(5/2): MGMT 3000 Final

Tuesday (5/3) – Monday (5/9): Study for FINA 3000 about 10 hours a day to pull off an A+.  Currently I have an A+, but the final is worth 50% of our grade!!!!

Monday (5/3): FINA 3000 Final

So that’s my schedule, not too bad, right?  It’s not that I have a lot of tests, I just need to finish as strong as I started.

New Media

screen-capture
I learned today that Rapidweaver 5 has come out! I immediately found it and installed it. I can firmly say that it is a much need upgrade to the application and I am glad I found it. However good it is, Rapidweaver has never seemed $79 good to me.

In more interesting news, my group New Media presentation was chosen to present at a special lunch/honorary event. Our teacher, Dr. Shamp, loved our idea of a sustainability quiz and a point system built into a website. I will be presenting on Saturday, 12/4 at the New Media Institute.

Finally, I would like to thank my beautiful girlfriend for the year of love and support she’s given me. Thank you, baby.

I got bored studying MGMT, so I made an App!

I got a little bored earlier today studying Management 3000, so I decided to take a break and make a small Mac application! It’s one of the most annoying things to me and there has never been an easy and quick fix.
Have you ever started cleaning out your hard-drive and got this popup? I seem to get it all the time. Maybe its because I have hardly any space left or maybe its because I try to do too much at one time, but either way the item won’t delete until you restart your computer.

Trashwontdelete

For me, this has been a problem for ages. I learned that you can kind of force delete the trash by choosing “Secure empty Trash”, but that doesn’t always work. My app works every time, and here’s how it works:

1. Running my “Delete Trash” app opens Terminal.app.
2. It inputs the command rm -rf ~/.Trash/* which will ALWAYS clear the trash.
3. It logs you out and closes terminal and itself. No clutter, just a clear Trash in about a second.

You can download “Delete Trash.app” by click below. Check it out!

Welcome & New Business Cards

Welcome to my WordPress blog! Most of what I have to say can be said succinctly in 140 characters. So why am I writing this? I’m writing this mostly to talk about updates and explain to you a little bit about myself and my interests. I feel like I have some good ideas and this is a place I can explain them in more depth. So check back later for more updates!

New business cards have arrived and I can't wait to show them off!  One thing I should note, these cards are probably not appropriate for anything other than in-college use.  I plan on getting something more profession after I graduate.  I created these cards COMPLETELY from scratch.  I did all the photoshopping.  It took the better part of two hours to come up with the idea and make it perfect.  My favorite touch is the pointer that is clicking the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.  Check it out below:

Short Thoughts on the Federal Deficit

The Federal Government is in trouble with it's mounting treasury debt. As of 2010, Total Public Debt Outstanding was over 96% of the US’s GDP. My Finance Professor sums it up bluntly; Read to the end for his awesome quote.

The other day, my Finance professor gave a fascinating rant about the Federal Deficit.  He gave a mini-lecture over the United States’ budget problems.  He showed us an alarming pie-chart where it cut up government spending into different sections.  He showed us that the government is spending $1.30 for every $1 it receives; this is a major problem because our federal deficit could soon reach 15 TRILLION dollars, an unprecedented high. Also, according to the Wall Street Journal, many major states are startlingly close to bankruptcy and will receive no Federal government bail-out. When one student noted a seemingly glaring hypocrisy, the Federal Government will bail out large private companies but not states, Professor Laplante countered with one of his favorite quips: “Those are just peanuts [compared to what it would take to bail out California].”

fy2010_spending_by_category

Above is a very telling graph of the 2010 federal budget.  You can see that the largest expenditures are Social Security, the Department of Defense, Medicare, and Unemployment/Welfare/mandatory spending.  You can see that two of the top four expenditures are related to the elderly and otherwise incapable of holding a job.  When we are spending thirty percent more than we have, doesn't this seem like a problem?  The government has made a promise that it can't hold in the long-run.  In the short-run they are acting irrationally.
My professor's awesome and impassioned response to this dilemma will forever remain etched in my memory.  When speaking about what politicians will have to do to fix the problem, he noted that the four pieces that represent the largest slices of the pie are what needs to change and that "everything else are peanuts".  In the most impassioned voice I have heard in years, Professor Laplante spoke:

"Any politician who wants to blow sunshine up your dress and tell you it can all be done… is a fucking liar."
